1% for the Planet is an international collective of companies, associations and individuals working together for a healthy planet. Member companies pledge to donate 1% of their annual sales to approved environmental protection organizations.
The NGO, launched in 2002 in the United States by Yvon Chouinard (founder and owner of Patagonia) and Craig Mathews, annually verifies donations and their correlation with sales. It is the only label to verify a level of environmental philanthropy (1% of sales) and the only international collective of philanthropic entrepreneurs working on environmental issues.
Indeed, environmental protection is the "poor relation" of philanthropy, accounting for just 3% of the sums involved. And yet the environmental problems we face and will face in the future are immense. The 1%'s mission is to increase environmental philanthropy and enhance the impact on the ground of actions carried out by environmental protection associations, by making it easier for them to raise funds.
Approved 1% for the Planet associations are working today to find tomorrow's solutions. The collective's actions are grouped into 6 themes that correspond to the major issues facing the planet today: biodiversity, water, pollution, natural spaces, food and climate.
